Why Do YOU Not Set Goals?

Everyone hears about goal setting and yet so few people actually do it! I can’t help but wonder why.  In a recent call we discussed the many reasons why people don’t actually set written goals for their business or their lives.

Fear of failure seems to be the number one reason!  I can certainly equate to this one because no one likes to come up short especially when other people are going to know.

Another reason seems to be not wanting to make a commitment.  A commitment means, of course, that you are actually going to make the effort required to achieve your goals.  This can seem overwhelming and so it’s easier just not to do anything.

Not understanding how to set goals was another good reason that was brought out.  Teaching people how to set goals is a major part of Leadership (at least to me it is) but if your mentor doesn’t do it, there a lot of sources that you can turn to.

Procrastination is another reason that unfortunately hits all of us at some point, me included.  But if this is one of your problems, you need to watch for it in all aspects of your life and work on it constantly.  I guess you could set a goal to not procrastinate Smile

Lastly, one of the problems was just “being lazy”.  Unfortunately there seem to be people who fall in this category, but this can be fixed by a burning desire to achieve something.  You just have to identify what that desire is!

The bottom line to all of this, is where do you fall?  Setting goals does take time and effort!  Then you will always have to redo them and update them to keep them current with where you are in your life and your business.  But if you don’t set goals, how will you ever know where you are headed?  Even as I write this, I look at MY goal board and  I realize that I need to update it and make new and amended goals.

So look at your business (and your life) and decide what you want and where you want to go and start making plans on how to get there!  Don’t worry about falling short of our goals, because no matter where you land, you will still be further ahead!

I hope you will give this some thought over the week-end and have some goals in place by Monday.

Have a Great Week-End,

Micki

Working From Home

Happy Hump Day!

I am guessing that you are wondering about the title for this blog post!  I must admit that it seems rather obvious considering that I am an Avon Representative, but I have noticed a lot lately that a lot of people seem to have a misconception on what working from home really means.

There are many different companies that allow you to work from home. The great thing is that you are your own boss, set your own hours, and have no one looking over your shoulder making sure that you are working every minute of the work day.

In my opinion this is the most wonderful way to work!  The problem that I am finding is that too many people don’t realize that you do HAVE to work.  In all honesty I will admit that there are times when the phone rings and I REALLY don’t want to answer it and deal with another problem.  Also, the idea of getting on the phone for 4 or more hours fills me with dread from time to time.  But I know that in order to make my business work, I have to invest my time.  For me, knowing that the distractions of home can prove impossible, many times I head to the local coffee shop to do my much needed phone work.  I still don’t have any one looking over my shoulder and I am outside under an umbrella enjoying the fresh air and the people and working my business.  This is one of the ways that I have found to help me do what I HAVE to do to make my business succeed.

Avon gives us some wonderful tools to work with, but they do no good if you don’t use them.  I am always amazed when I ask someone a question and they don’t know the answer when it is right before them if they just look at the tools that we have.  I don’t always like the answers that I see, but I know I have to look in order to try and fix them.

So the bottom line, to me, is that Working From Home is wonderful.  But please remember that you do have to work.  So plan your time and your work, use the tools your company gives you and make your home based business a success.

Have a Great Hump Day,

Micki

Have Your Goals Changed?

Good Morning,

Once again I have found that a recent conference call that I was on bears more discussion.  To me it is truly funny that I have avoided conference calls like the plague for years and now I am finding a wealth of inspiration and motivation from being on them.  Embarassed

On our regular call with Bill Coleman and Vondell McKenzie last Thursday, one of the things we talked about was people who stopped doing what they needed to do in their business.  Vondell said that when that happened the first thing she did was call and ask “Have your goals changed?”

This idea was brought home to me over the last week with a bang!  One of my reps, who has been with me for some time, seemed to be losing more ground than usual.  We have set goals, planned them out, and broken them down into bite size pieces but nothing seemed to be working.  After agonizing about it for several days, I have begun to wonder if maybe the reps goals have changed.  So often we tend to put our goals on people and then wonder when they don’t perform up to our expectations.

I think the hardest thing for me, personally, is to just let go!  We all have to remember that each person has their own goals and no matter how much we want them to succeed, it has to be THEIR decision, THEIR goal and THEIR work that makes it happen.

So as you go into the rest of your week and you look at your downline, try to remember that each person has their own agenda and while you are there to help and mentor, no matter how much you want to help, the ultimate decision is theirs.  Have you checked to see if what their goals are, or if they have changed?

The Power of Praise!

Another Happy Friday!

I had a huge reminder yesterday of the power of praise.  I got an email from someone who I greatly esteem. He was praising me for something that I do for the good that I get from it.  All evening long I was on a cloud of excitement.  When Amy got home I made her come read the email before she even had a chance to get settled. We all know how much it means to receive praise from our peers, but I wonder if we sometimes forget to give more than we get?

When you are working with your Avon partners it is very easy to get frustrated when things aren’t going the way you want them to. And if they do something that isn’t quite like you think it should be done you probably want to tear your hair out!!!  Don’t get me wrong, I don’t believe you tell someone that something was great when it was horrible!  But people being people, they are going to make mistakes.  I heard once that there is no such thing as constructive criticism and I really believe that is true.  If you can word your suggestions in such a way as to make them understand a better way to do something versus the idea that they did it wrong, it will help keep their feelings intact.

If at the same time you can find something to praise them for, you will leave them in a much better frame of mind to do what they need to do.  I try very hard to stick to this idea, because I have found that there is ALWAYS something I can find to compliment them on.

While I am addressing this to your Avon business, please remember the idea should expand to everyone in your life.  Your customers, your family, your friends and everyone you come in contact with on a daily basis will benefit from your postive happy attitude.

I have always tried to make a point of getting a smile from everyone I meet or talk to.  This can sometimes be quite a trial Cry  But trust me, it works.  If can leave a person a little happier than they were when I first got there, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

So as we finish our week and head into the week-end, maybe you will think about this and start “praising your people to success”.  Just try it and see.  I guarantee that not only will the people around you be happier, but so will you!

Have a great weekend!

Micki
